What it does
E-bike chains, especially on mid-drives, wear faster than on regular bikes. A worn chain wears out the gears, which cost more to replace.
Signs of a problem
- Skipping or slipping under load
- Clicking or noisy pedaling
- Chain falling off
Safe things to check
- A shop or a cheap chain checker tool can measure wear in seconds.
- Turn the pedals backward and look for stiff links.
Looking after it
- Clean and lube it regularly, more often after rain.
- Replace it before it's worn enough to damage the gears.
