Also called: hydraulic brakes, disc brakes
What it does
They're strong and need little hand force, which suits heavier, faster e-bikes.
Signs of a problem
- Lever feels soft or spongy, or reaches the handlebar
- Squealing or grinding
- Brakes rubbing
Safe things to check
- Squeeze each lever: it should feel firm and stop well short of the bar.
- Soft or spongy: don't ride; the brake may need bleeding.
Looking after it
- Keep oil and lube off the rotors and pads.
- Brake bleeding needs the right fluid for your brand; a shop job for most riders.
