Also called: pedal force sensor
What it does
The harder you pedal, the more the motor helps, which feels natural and smooth. Most mid-drives and better hub-motor bikes have one.
Signs of a problem
- Assist that's weak, delayed or uneven
- An error or warning right after switching on
Safe things to check
- Switch on with your feet off the pedals; many systems calibrate the sensor at start-up.
- If assist stays weak, note any error code and have it tested.
Looking after it
- Avoid switching on with weight on the pedals.
- Torque sensors aren't a home repair; a shop can test and calibrate them.
